Wafuka Tenugui - Hiragana Alphabet

These tenugui are made using the traditional chusen technique, where the cotton is dyed and printed by hand to create a precise pattern. The dye is applied directly to the cloth instead of a printed pattern.

In the Chusen technique, the cloth is stretched on a wooden frame and first wetted with water. Printing is done by pressing ink through a stencil (katagami) with the desired pattern, which is made of paper or cloth. This process is repeated several times to apply the color and complete the pattern.
Since each thread is dyed, this does not affect the breathability and elasticity of the fabric as opposed to printing.
