Nankei Banko Yaki green
CHF 48.00

Japanese tea bowl from Nankei, Yokkaichi, approx. 240 ml. Genuine pottery made of natural Banko clay. The tea bowl has a transparent glaze. Japanese tea bowls made of Banko are famous and popular for their high quality, Banko Yaki (the clay from Banko) can be fired at much higher temperatures, which increases stability. Nankei is a traditional pottery manufactory in the heart of the Banko area. The products convince with their formal balance, minimalist design and high, handcrafted precision.

This naturally formed pattern is called crazing, and the glaze brings out this unique pattern that benefits from the different shrinkage of the clay and glaze during the process. This crazing is then pigmented with sumi ink, a charcoal-based ink. This tea cup is designed to absorb the color of the tea over time, adding to the character of the cup.

Another unique feature of this cup is that when hot water is first poured on it, it makes a unique crackling sound which is not a sign of a defect or crack.

Nankei Pottery is a manufacturer of banko ware located in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. The pottery of the company, which was originally a "clay manufacturer" selling clay to make pottery, is characterized by its unique matte color and soft texture.
