Vintage Chawan from the 80s with gold accents and original box.
The tea bowls, also called chawan, are used to whip the high-quality matcha and then drink from it. Suitable chawan are therefore larger than our European tea bowls and usually thicker walled. A chawan should be large enough to be able to whip the tea in the bowl. Chawan are made of ceramic, not porcelain.
The glaze can crack over time, creating unique, stunning patterns. These cracks in the glaze are said to give the tea character and are often referred to as the "voice of tea." Each chawan is therefore unique.
