This book is a revised and updated new edition, together with the author, of the work "The Ikebana Book. Von Geist und Schönheit des japanischen Blumensteckens", which was published by Ulmer-Verlag in Stuttgart in 1982 (ISBN 3800161184) and soon became a standard work of Ikebana, widely read not only by Ikebana enthusiasts but also by florists and lovers of Japan. After being unavailable for a number of years, it has now been republished.Ikebana is an art that originally developed in Japan. Only in recent decades has it found more and more followers in the Western world. This book gives an overview of the essential basics of Ikebana. It takes into account the teachings and methods of various schools of Ikebana in Japan, and uses examples of both classical and modern styles, so as to present the very essence of this floral art, independent of any particular school. "Ikebana" (literally "living flowers") means, roughly, bringing flowers to life and giving them a new lease of life. When the Ikebana artist takes a flower or other plant from nature and puts it in a vase, he not only keeps it alive with water, but also makes it begin a new life as part of a work of art, giving it a more beautiful appearance than nature had given it. In other words: Ikebana is a creative activity that uses plants to create a flower sculpture. Ikebana is a learnable art, and those who learn it find it delightful in a new way at each stage of learning. Once you start, you will soon discover that it is a very joyful and gratifying activity. One lives with the world of plants and learns to see in it in new ways. Ikebana also has a craft side, and in the centuries of intensive study of flowers and branches, the Ikebana masters have developed it into a wealth of artifices to help the beauty of plants to develop to the fullest.Ikebana is more than just the technique of creating decorative flower arrangements. The path of Ikebana is stimulating and deeply connected to nature and philosophy. By deepening one`s understanding of nature, it enriches one`s whole life, and the further one goes down this path, the more delight one finds in it. This book is intended to help understand what ikebana is, and to encourage one`s own active involvement with this beautiful art.

Graefe, Ayako
This book is first-hand: the author, Ayako Graefe (née Yasuda), was born and raised in Japan; her pen name is Seiiku ("quiet elegance"), and she is a high-ranking Ikebana teacher in the Sogetsu School. In this book, however, she presents the teachings and methods of various schools of ikebana in Japan independently of any particular school - and, to our knowledge, this is still happening for the first time - and explains them using examples of classical and modern styles. In this way she makes visible the very essence of all Ikebana art and brings it closer to Western feeling and thinking. The author thoroughly introduces the reader to the cultural, philosophical and historical background of the art of Ikebana and thus points the way to a well-founded appreciation of the aesthetics of Ikebana and its styles and to an understanding application of its technique. Magnificent photographs, taken especially for the original publication or selected by the author in Japan, and equally magnificent drawings lead the viewer through contemplation fully to the desired realization of the essential. Ayako Graefe is all the more convincing as a mediator because she is not only familiar with her native culture; after studying linguistics and ethnology in Japan, New Zealand and the USA, which she completed with a Master of Arts in Polynesian linguistics, the scientist worked at the universities of Hawaii, Copenhagen and Munich. For many years she was an employee of museums and galleries, and even longer, married to a German professor, she has worked in Germany as an Ikebana teacher and artist. She is president of Ikebana-Sogetsu München e. V. and of the Munich branch of the Sogetsu School. She is well known through her demonstrations, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and television appearances in Germany and abroad. Against this background, the clever, clear and sensitive encounter with Japan`s Ikebana succeeds.
